Local dance company Small Stage teamed up with Tourism Vancouver to present a colorful display of outdoor modern dance performances. Well known Vancouver dancer Chengxin Wei, formerly with Ballet BC and the founder/choreographer of Moving Dragon performed on June 20th at the Wall Center and June 23 at the Bentall Centre outdoor plaza. Wei moves with grace and strength befitting a dancer who was classically trained in China but has also mastered the nuances of modern dance. The June 20 performance also featured a rising dance delight, Jeanette Kotowich, a Metis dancer who is expressive. Kotowich is the co-founder of Metis Dance Collective, ‘Acuhko Simowuk’ which translates to dancing with ancestors. On June 23, Wei once again pleased the outdoor audience and those fortunate to be out for a stroll with a colorful performance under a canopy of pink bubbles and silk cloth. The musical interlude featured cool songstresskrystle Dos Santos who emotionally performed the tunes, ‘Tennessee Whiskey’ and ‘If I Ain’t Got You’. Small Stage creative producer Julie-Anne Saroyan deserves credit for arranging the bright outdoor artistic performances that are inclusive, open and bring long overdue cheer to Vancouver audiences. As artistic performances re-open in Vancouver and around Canada, impressive talents like Kotowich, Wei and Dos Santos are a must see for every cultural enthusiast. © 2021 Ross Michael Pink |
