Dates and Venue 27 & 28 January 2011, 8pm | Orpheum Theatre Conductor Jeff Tyzik Featured performer Tony DeSare singer & piano Reviewer Ed Farolan Although Thyzik and DeSare are the stars of this show, the instrmentalist who stood out in this performance was Dale Barltrop, VSO's Concertmaster, from Brisbane, Australia. Tyzik himself complemented him for doing the best violin rendition of "Autumn in New York", Tyzik's arrangement of Duke's classic song popularized by many singers including Frank Sinatra. DeSare also congratulated him for his violin rendition of this song. Read the review
Dates and Venue 26 January 2012, 2pm | Orpheum Theatre Conductor Pierre Simard, Host Christopher Gaze Reviewer Michael Pink Pierre Simard, assistant conductor of the VSO, guided the performance with the featured guest, Soprano, Nadya Blanchette. The music flowed with vitality and precision and brought forth particularly enthusiastic applause. Simard is a master of symphonic harmony. The holder of five Conservatory Prizes from the Conservatoire de Musique in Montreal, he is also the Artistic Director of the Symphony Orchestra in Drummondville, Quebec. Read the review
Dates and Venue 7 & 9 January 2012, 8pm | Orpheum Theatre Conductor Rossen Milanov Featured performer Corey Cerovsek, violin Reviewer John Jane Vancouver born Corey Cerovsek returned to the Orpheum concert hall with his 300 year old Stradivarius this weekend for a series of three back-to-back concerts. When the young Cerovsek made his orchestral debut with the Calgary Philharmonic he was only nine years old. Now almost forty, he is no longer regarded as a Wunderkind, but has gone on to be a guest soloist with all the major Canadian orchestras and many others outside Canada – if anyone has lived up to their earlier potential – it is Corey Cerovsek.
