My evening at the Shadbolt Center went quickly due to the fact that I was enjoying Footprints an evening of modern dance by two entertaining dance companies.Youth in Motion Junior Company and Continuum Dance Company performed well.

The opening curtain brought a whole range of ages and experience to the stage. It was great to see such a variety in dancers.

Stand by Me: I enjoyed the 11 dancers who performed in trench coats to that great piece of music “Stand by Me” which was dedicated to the homeless people in Vancouver. We need someone to love.

Delusion: It opened with patients in blue hospital gowns. This was a very dramatic well choreographed rendition of mentally unstable patients. Nice work Dominique Hutchinson.

Loggers: Now this was a knee slapping, foot stomping country appeal of musical chairs, great smiles and a good sense of humour.

Jack’s Butterflies, Birds and Beast: I found that duplicating the backdrop of butterflies in Shadbolt’s abstracts into the costumes of the dancers was a good choice. The dance brought his works to life.

Christina Carter-Hughes and Greg Gurel from the Continuum Dancers gave hope and inspiration to mature dancers to “Never give up your aspirations and love of dance.”

An enthusiastic audience, upbeat performances and yes, it was as successful night of modern dance.
