Born in 1982, the 90s was my ‘jam’ as I went through my coming of age during highschool in Chilliwack within this decade. I loved everything from the music, fashion, pop culture, lingo and more. So obviously, it was a clear choice to get to Granville Island for opening night of Bring Back the ‘90s at the Improv Centre and I was definitely not disappointed!

The soundtrack of music that flooded the lobby upon entry, from The Smashing Pumpkins, Tonight, Tonight to the dance track Montel Jordan, This Is How We Do It, brought a wave of nostalgia throughout the boutique theatre. This was evident by the smiles on everyone’s faces who were dancing and singing along to the old school tracks.

The set was decorated on point with a shagged carpet, neon backdrops and much more that were symbols of that era. The actors’ costumes were reminiscent of this decade with overalls, oversized shirts, high pony tails and more! This helped the audience truly feel as though we had stepped into the past to a simpler time made famous by classic prime time cable TV shows such as Seinfeld and oversized mobile phones.

The premise for the plot was that the audience was going to help a TV network producer develop a new show that would be all things 90s, including the typical ‘nerd’, rebellious siblings, an overindulgent parent and a picture perfect house. The audience enjoyed engaging with the producer by determining how the plot would unfold with their suggestions, such as titling the cast names and their activities including an Etch-A-Sketch contest!

The audience was further engaged by being called on stage where two cast members went out into the audience to find their doppelgangers who would serve as their ‘extras’ on set. This was hilarious and made everyone remain engaged and entertained. By the closing act, it was evident that this event was a success and brought the diverse audience together as one cohesive unit – all lovers of everything 90s!

If you’re looking for a fun night out, there’s no better way to spend an evening than off the cuff improv in a cozy setting on Granville Island. Like they say in the 90s, let’s roll, yo!
