The first part of tonight’s program is Keep Driving, I’m Dreaming and I am amazed at the agility and strikingly unusual movements of these talented dancers. The sheer size of the work involved and discipline is overwhelming to me. Emily Molnar (choreographer) asks her dancers “Where would you go if you put your life on hold”? ...and so the first act becomes Keep Driving, I’m Dreaming. If you are involved in ballet or have been a dedicated patron of abstract ballet then you will have a feel and understanding of this ballet. Without some understanding of this modern style of ballet some patrons may not find it appealing to them.

According to the program Minus 16 was to have been at the beginning of the program. If it had been first I think the start of the evening would have been far more stimulating for the audience. It was performed last. When Minus 16 begins, a different, more fun atmosphere is created. The audience reacts to this lively performance. They are familiar with most of the music. People will feel closer to a performance when they can relate to the dance, music or storyline. The dancers look like they are having fun and it shows in their awesome dance movements. We relate to Dean Martin and then Hava Nagila. All 16 members of Ballet BC dance during this more upbeat and fun performance. I am dying to be more descriptive of this ballet but I don’t want to spoil it for those who haven’t had the pleasure of attending it. Naharin created Minus 16 for BC Ballet and it is the first company to commission work from him. Naharin’s Minus 16 is superb.

Naharin developed the Gaga movement technique. Gaga is improvisational. The dancers are in tune to their bodies and physical senses .The movements are based on mother earth, in other words, what comes naturally. It is truely the dancers’ interpretation.

As with previous seasons, it ended with a silent auction, closing with the final performance on May 13. There was a large selection of auction items to bid on: restaurants, health clubs, events, travel, and art. It wais wonderful to see so many businesses supporting Ballet BC. Please see the auction on line and support Ballet BC.
